Illegal to Feed the Homeless?

Anti-poverty activists and civil rights advocates filed a lawsuit against the city of Las Vegas this week challenging an ordinance that makes it illegal to feed homeless people in public. The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada filed the suit Wednesday on behalf of activists with Food Not Bombs, a grassroots anti-poverty group that provides free, vegetarian meals in hundreds of city parks across the country. Plaintiffs claim the new law, passed July 19 , violates constitutional rights to free speech, free exercise of religion, free assembly, due process of law and equal protection under the law. Las Vegas joins a growing number of cities passing laws and ordinances that target the homeless and their advocates. City councilors in Orlando, Florida also recently voted 5-2 in favor of a measure making it illegal to feed homeless people in public parks and other downtown areas. The Orlando ordinance bans dispensing food to large groups within a two-mile radius of City Hall without a permit, and limits permits to “two per user per park in a 12 month period.” The ordinance states that feeding groups in public parks creates “hazards to the health and welfare of citizens, birds and animals, and is detrimental to the aesthetic atmosphere of parks.” As previously reported by The NewStandard, a growing number of cities are passing laws and ordinances intended to push homeless people out of public places. In addition to anti-panhandling, anti-camping and anti-loitering ordinances, feeding programs in public parks are the latest targets. Homeless-rights advocate Michael Stoops described this trend as “a big battle in downtown American between the interests of low-income people and the interests of the business community.”

500 Humans Died in China Flood; Nobody Cares

by Lance Winslow

This week 500 human beings died in China and a massive flood, but no one seems to care because they are too worried about the Israel-Hezbollah War. In the conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon 300 people have died over a 10-day period, where as in China 500 people died in a single afternoon due to flooding. There was hardly mention of it even in that world news.

In fact Chinese officials believe the death toll may be much more than 500 and might be triple. Yet the world is fixed to the TV sets in their living rooms watching the war between Arabs and Jews.

There will never be peace in the Middle East and is probably time that people on the planet observed that truth. Israel will eventually defeat Hezbolla and yet the president of Lebanon stated that if Israel’s army invades Lebanon fan in the Lebanese army will join in with Hezbolla and another revolutionary group and fight Israel’s army.

Yet at the same time Lebanon and Hezbollah are asking the United Nations to intervene and call for a cease-fire. Meanwhile, Israel is already passed the border by three or 4 miles and in some places 10 miles. In fact Israel has already crossed the border. This is another case of Arabs joining their Arab brother who normally they would try to kill in a Machiavellian tight unity where; the enemy of my enemy is my friend. At least for a few weeks.

It appears that neither side wants peace and both sides want total victory and therefore there can be no political negotiation and any possible negotiation can only end in impasse causing another war and both sides know this. Meanwhile Israel does not wish to give Hezbolla time to regroup or the Lebanese army time to join up with Hezbolla and therefore things are about to get worse and go to the next step.

Additionally, you can expect that if the Lebanese army joins up with Hezbolla to fight against Israel, that serious and Iran will be entering this conflict soon. This could be the start of World War III, however I would like to make a point about human life.

If we are all of the same genetics then all human life is important whether it is during that time of need of a massive flood caused by Mother Nature or two different groups of people who have never gotten along trying to kill one another. Please consider this philosophical point for a moment as we watch events unfold into a resolution or a World War.

Confronting Classism

by Donna Warnock and Laura Briggs (From Handbook for Nonviolent Action, published by the War Resisters League)

We live in the wealthiest country in the world, but the greatest percentage of that wealth is in the hands of a tiny percentage of the population. It is environmentally and technically possible for everyone to enjoy a good standard of living if wealth were redistributed, exploitation ceased and the arms race abandoned. The inequitable distribution of wealth prevents the whole society from enjoying the full benefits of people’s labor, intelligence and creativity and causes great misery for working class and poor people.

Classism is the systematic oppression of poor people and people who work for wages by those who have access to control of the necessary resources by which other people make their living. Classism is also held in place by a system of beliefs which ranks people according to economic status, “breeding,” job and level of education. Classism says that upper class people are smarter and more articulate than working class and poor people. It is a way of keeping people down, it means upper-middle class and wealthy people define for everyone else what “normal” or “acceptable” is. Many of us have come to accept this standard as the norm and many of us have bought the myth that most of the country is middle class.

Criteria for determining class identity is subject to debate, being variously defined by origins, workforce status, income and/or outlook. For example, some consider all who derive their income from wages members of the working class; others exclude that percentage of the workforce which constitutes the professionals and managers whose incomes are high enough to provide a stake in the capitalist system. Depending on the breadth of one’s definition, 70-85% of the population can be considered working class. This is true despite the fact that the individuals themselves might identify as or with the middle class. These individuals, however, are not beneficiaries of middle class privileges.

Class affects people not only on an economic level, but also on an emotional level. Classist attitudes have caused great pain by dividing people from one another and keeping individuals from personal fulfillment or the means to survive. Consequently, the process of rejecting such attitudes and their accompanying misinformation is an emotional one. Since people tend to hurt each other because they themselves have been hurt, and since most forms of oppression are accompanied by economic discrimination, class overlaps with many other social issues, all of which move as we unravel how we’ve been hurt.

The stereotype is that poor and working class people are unintelligent, inarticulate and “overly emotional.” A good ally (a non-working-class committed supporter) will contradict these messages by soliciting the knowledge and histories of poor working class people, being a thoughtful listener, trying to understand what is being said, and not criticizing how the message is being presented or responding with automatic defensiveness. Distrust despair and anger are common consequences of oppression; it is the test of a true ally to remain undeterred when these flare up and to refrain from withdrawing support at such points. When targets of oppression believe the lies about ourselves, we are “internalizing our oppression.” To begin to undo the damage caused by classism, it is useful for everyone to examine our own feelings about money, education, privilege, power, relationships, culture and ethnicity. This advice applies to organizations as well.

For general discussion:

As a movement, who are we and who are we trying to reach in terms of class? How? To whom do our literature and events appeal? How are poor people’s needs being met in our organizing? What steps are being taken to change people’s attitudes about classism? Are poor and Third World people invited to participate in organization planning? What is being done to reach and involve organized and unorganized workers? What are we doing to support poor, workingdass and people of color in their struggles?

The situation for poor and workingclass people in our movement and organization:

Is classism evident in who does what work in the organization? Are poor and workingclass people facilitators, spokespeople and/or media contacts and leaders, and not just relegated to cleanup crews and collating mailings? Are organizing expenses paid upfront, or promptly reimbursed?

Meetings and events:

Make meetings and events known and accesssible to poor and workingclass people. Be aware of how the length, time and frequency of meetings affects full-time workers, especially those who parent. Arrange for transportation. Routinely provide childcare and sliding scales. Ask people what they need to be able to attend meetings and events. How does income-level and dass composition affect the development of resources, the dates of demonstrations, the levels of commitment and power working people can have, the events sponsored? What are the cultural offerings? Who are the speakers and entertainers?

Process:

Make sure that process isn’t actually being used to tell poor and workingclass people how to behave by “proper” etiquette.

Is consensus being used so that decisions favor those who can stay the longest, or who are used to getting their own way and will block to do so?

Watch that group hugs and rituals are not imposed–allow people to interact with each other in whatever ways feel comfortable to them.

Civil disobedience (CD):

Does class determine who is able and who is unable to commit civil disobedience? How can we make it economically possible for those who want to commit CD to do so? How do we keep CD from being a movement privilege, with activists who can afford to tally arrest counts granted subsequently more political prestige? How do those who are arrested relate to the regular prison population (taking into account how class figures in their treatment)?

Be aware of how police are dealing with people of color, gay, lesbian, and known movement people during arrest situations. Be prepared to come to the aid of anyone who has been singled out by the police and may be receiving harsher treatment than others.

Realize that during the booking process questions that are being asked to determine whether or not people can be released on their own recognizance, are particularly discriminatory. These questions concentrate on your economic, social, sexual and prior arrest standing.

Realize that bail is the most blatant example of classism. Those who have money get out of jail–those who don’t stay in.

Africa: Threat of Locust Plagues

by Lance Winslow

We have a serious crisis in feeding the world as we approach some 10 billion humans on the planet. That is a lot of people and mouths to feed. Then there are the locust plagues, water issue and agricultural problems they face in the third world, specifically Africa.

Indeed and perhaps there a way to stop locust plagues and help us catch up and solve this problem, as the World Bank and researchers are looking for way to stop the Locust Plagues and re-establish agriculture as a way to feed the African Continent.

It is kind of a tough job once you have everything going and the Locust Plague comes along and eats all your crops. In fact in reading the World Bank white papers of David J. Spielman on private-public agriculture partnerships it appears to me that they would love to lick this problem once and for all. Especially considering the lack of water issues and the loss of lake, river and surface water in Africa.

If there is funding available to solve the African Locust Problem then shouldn’t it be done? Can’t we find a way to prevent millions from starving simply because a locust plague wiped out a season or year’s worth of crops? There has to be a way to figure this out and funds are available for someone who has the answers. Consider this in 2006.

Charity Computer Donations

by Josh Riverside

Every year, in millions of homes and offices around the world, old computers are callously dumped to be replaced with latest technology computers. It is a callous act, because not many amongst us can claim to be ignorant of the fact that numerous organizations around us can put the old computers to good use. These organizations such as non-profit charity organizations, religious organizations, schools and a number of families have to sometimes carry on their work with no computers. You could also donate your computer to a person with some disability. You might, in all probability, be providing him with fresh opportunities and a chance to earn his livelihood. So, think hard before dumping a computer. You could be dumping somebody’s chance to earn his daily bread.

When you donate a computer in charity, you donate technology. Most charity organizations are dependent on generous donors like you for their technology requirements. They would rather utilize their limited funds in providing basic amenities to the needy rather than buying expensive computers. There are several organizations that accept computer donations and transfer them to the charity of your choice. Some of these organizations upgrade the computers according to the latest technology and then donate them to the concerned charity or school or even to a needy family. You can also get in touch with a local charity or a family in need of computers and donate directly to them. Several organizations act as a link between donors and organizations that are in need of computers. Certain organizations may also help you to get in touch with individuals, in case you wish to donate to an individual rather than an organization.

Computer donations are a valuable contribution for most organizations and play a very vital role in their development programs. Some organizations use the computers to provide training to people with disabilities or health problems. The organization, therefore, acts as a training center that helps create job opportunities for the disabled. Some people prefer to send their old computers to recyclers or refurbishers who repair and upgrade the computers before passing them on to schools or charities.

When you donate a computer, you qualify for a tax deduction if you donate to a registered charity. So, do not forget to get a receipt of the donated computer from the charitable organization you are donating to.

Charity Furniture Donations

by Josh Riverside

To discard the old furniture, when you are about to makeover the decor of your house, is a natural impulse for most of us. But do you realize that every time you throw out your old furniture, you could also be throwing away somebody’s chance to lead a better life? Wouldn’t it be more fulfilling to get the desired décor for your house and in the process also help someone in need?

Donate your furniture rather than discarding it. But make sure that it is in a saleable condition. Furniture that is badly damaged or worn out is not accepted by most charity organizations. Many charity organizations welcome donations in the form of furniture and may even be willing to pick it up from your home without charging any fee. However, if you wish to avail the services of a free pick up, be sure to enquire about the availability of this service before you make the donation. Many organizations require a minimum donation before they provide the services of a free pick up.

A more preferred method would be to look for local charitable organizations that accept furniture donations. It is easier for the charity donations that are within your vicinity to pick the furniture from your home, especially if it is not viable for you to deliver the furniture to the organization yourself. Be sure to ask for the receipt of the articles from the charity after they have picked up the furniture items from your house. Make a list of these items along with their estimated market value. Preserve the list and the receipt for your tax deductions. The method of filing this information with your taxes varies according to the value of the furniture that you have donated. Information on this can be obtained from authorized sources, when you make the donation. A wonderful resource these days is the Internet where you will be able to find all relevant information, from locating local charities to methods of making the donation.

Parting with your favorite couch will not be a saddening thought any more, if you realize the comfort that its donation can bring to the life of another human.
